Rate of immigration is increasing day by day due to globalization, modernization, improved technologies and developments in all the sectors. When people want to grow in life or need more exposure and opportunities, they opt to go away from their own country or place. There is a rapid increase in the number of students who are opting for higher education abroad as well.
The human being is a parcel of emotions. Moving away from the own origins and the act of immigration affects people psychologically in many ways.
They have to face emotional stress not only because of separation from parents, siblings and friends but they also miss family customs, traditions, festivals and culture. Adjusting to a new social environment and an foreign culture can create uncomfortable feelings. Common feelings for many immigrants in this phase is the fear of unknown people, the unknown culture and strange situations. These feelings can cause various symptoms:
1. Fatigue, frustration and irritation
2. Insomnia and nightmares
3. Headache and upset stomach
4. Fearfulness and distrust
Acknowledge that when you move, you may experience anxiety (fear of the unknown) and/or grief for leaving people and places behind. We resist change because it often feels forced upon us or is unpredictable. View the move as a transition.
We have a few tips which might be helpful to you:
• It is most important to always remember the purpose and your future goal which made you move.
• Manage a healthy lifestyle and a routine of eating, sleeping and exercising to keep a balance of the body cycle or the circadian rhythms.
• Get in touch with your parents, siblings, friends or well-wishers.
• Embrace change and accept new people, their culture and their way of working.
• Practice meditation and mindfulness.
